The demon at the gate. Frightening on purpose, to keep worse things away.

Horns, tusks, a club, skin in red or blue. Oni are punishers rather than pure evil, and wearing one is a way of saying you can carry your own bad luck. Faces work at any size; full figures need a shoulder or back.
