Perseverance. The carp that climbs the waterfall becomes a dragon.

Swimming upstream means struggle still under way; swimming down means the struggle is won. Ask which one you want before the outline goes on. Black, red and gold are the traditional colours, and a single koi on the forearm is one of the most common first large pieces in the studio.
