Protection. The lion-dog that guards the gate and drives off evil.

Lions came to Japan as an idea, not an animal, which is why the karajishi has curls for a mane and a face like a mask. Traditionally paired with peonies, the king of flowers, a pairing so fixed it has its own name. Works at any size from a hand to a full back.
